Chunking
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Michelle,
Chunking is essentially using larger phonemic elements to word solve. But children must be made aware of and use analogy in order to get the best and quickest use of this. For example, the child pauses on
the word 'understand'. Hopefully, the meaning of whatever's being read is intact for the child, so the prediction of what the word will be more accurate. The child might find /un/ as in fun, /er/ as in her, and /st/ as in stop, plus /and/...that's chunking. But it is much more powerful when you work from ALREADY known WORDS. It's harder to get the child to memorize an isolated bit
that some of the phonics programs promote...remember to link new to something that's known. For Kinders and First graders, classmates names are powerful links. If you want more info. on this, post or email and I'll dig out some professional book titles. Best of luck. ;-D
