paddling
By Gabby

Clip to ScrapBook
I read the same article in PEOPLE magazine and didn't notice any photos as described with the story. Also, the story implied that the child didn't do anything wrong but was simply humiliated by the teacher. I can't remember
exactly what the story was and I've already thrown away the article, but I do remeber discussing the article with a coworker. I teach in a county in Mississippi that still allows corporal punishment. I have never known a teacher to paddle a student for no reason which is what the PEOPLE article pretty much implied. We are also required to administer the paddling in privacy with only
the teacher, student, and witness. This is to prevent "embarassment" and "humiliation" for the child. I personally think that SOMETIMES a little embarassment can go a long way in convincing students to straighten up their behavior.
Another thing that upset me about the story is that we only got one side. We all know that every story has two sides...and I'm willing to bet the teacher's story is very different. Too bad the magazine didn't report on her/his side of the situation.
