McGraw-Hill vs.Scholastic By Karen

Our district adopted McGraw - Hill Reading and Language Arts two years ago and I like it (I teach second grade in Texas). The only problem that we have is that we do Saxon Phonics in grades K-2 and the McGraw-Hill phonics| and spelling don't match. The stories in this series are great, the kids really like them. It also has technical stories, which help us practice for TAAS, since the test has a lot of technical rather than creative reading. All the stories in the series are AR, including the leveled readers. I use the leveled readers alot in small groups - however the easy readers are still difficult |
| for some at the beginning of the year - all the leveled readers are on 2nd grade level when it would make more sense to me to have the easy ones be 1st grade, independent 2nd grade, and challenge third grade. When we were deciding which to adopt, I tried out scholastic series for about a week in my classroom and it was good too, the only problem was that there were so many activities - I had a hard time getting them all in everyday. Be aware that both series have alot of materials - I still have some McGraw-Hill things that I have never even opened after two years! I hope this information has helped you a little - they are both good programs.
