retention
By Karen

Clip to ScrapBook
Oh, I would LOVE to have just the option to retain! In my district in Massachusetts we do "social promotion"...in other words, we don't retain pretty much no matter what. I had a 7th grader last year who failed every class,
every term all year. He was forwarded to 8th grade. There is NO accountability and he knew it. I will have the same thing this year with a real trouble maker. He has actually SAID that he didn't need to do any work, we had to pass him anyway. (The only difference is that instead of putting "pass" on his files, they put "promoted"...so, what's the difference?!). Until these kids are
held accountable, they will continue to do nothing.

As far as your individual problem, I would discuss it with the principal to get another opinion. It seems to me that if you're with this child 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, you should know what will work and what won't with him. Perhaps getting the principal's point of view would help you and the guidance counselor make the best decision for this child. Good luck!
