I, too, show videos on Friday afternoons. I use videos that go along with what I am or have been teaching. Videos can be very beneficial when used to introduce, review, reinforce, or enrich. Definitely do as your principal suggests, but explain that this is time well spent. Perhaps give your principal a list of the videos you plan to show during the year along with the summary and standards for each. Usually there is a good summary on the back of each video. I have had students who were having a difficult time understanding a concept, but after viewing the video "caught on". I have had children bring videos from home, but will not show them unless they are educational and go along with what I am or have been teaching. Hope this helps.
