What I look for now By Former Sub
I was a permanent sub for half a year in a K class room, because of the situation I was required to take a day off every 25 days. Now I am a regular classroom teacher and here is what I look for: *Please, try and follow the notes a teacher left. We go through a great deal of effort to try and make a sub's experience a positive one. *Leave a detailed note telling us of what was and was not completed, behavior issues, and positives too! *Do not let the children go through the teacher's personal belongings. I had a sub that let the kid's go through my desk! (I have no key to lock it.) *Have |
| an emergency back up plan. Sometimes a regular classroom teacher doesn't expect to be out, like in the case of a sudden death in the family, and they will leave things unprepared for you. Try to get there as early as possible so that you can ask other teacher's for plans, activities, etc., ALSO, have a bag of tricks. Even if a detailed note is left, you still might finish up early...have some read aloud books with activities, word searches, coloring activities, etc. It is better to be over prepared! Kids with nothing to do will find something to do. *To me...to heck with grading papers...but IF time allows separate papers, even put them in number order if you can. Those little things make life so much easier upon returning to your room. *Try to leave the room in order. The kids should help with this. They know what the regular classroom teacher expects. Subs do a great job everyday! It is not easy, so keep up the awesome work!
