Suggestions? By Krystyna

I also teach sixth grade in an elementary school. I find that praising students who are doing the "right" thing is crucial when managing behavorial problems. At the end of a day I give out certificates to those students who| worked well and were focused. At a local teacher store I purchased these certificates, which came in a pack of 30.They were really affordable. I believe the manufacturer was Frank Shaffer(sp?)The kids love them and look forward to receiving them. They come back the next day and say, "My mom was proud of me, when are you going to get another one?" If you have the children seperated | | into tables, this might work. During the day give table points to those tables which worked cooperatively. At the end of the week, give them a special treat (homework pass, free time, certificate). This will allow students to support one another in achieving the goal---getting the prize. One more idea- I have an incentive chart on one of my bulletin boards entitled "Hearts of Gold." If you use gold hearts it looks really nice, but I never can find them, so I use the traditional red or pink hearts. Each time I see a child doing something really nice for another child I give them a "heart of gold" or if another teacher compliments someone or the class I also give the "heart of gold." Hope some of these suggestions are useful!!
