recess
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
Basically, I do what the above poster does, except I write the word RECESS on the board. When they get chatty, I erase one letter, starting with the letter S. Once all letters are erased, they lose five minutes of recess time. I start the word recess all over again. I think it has only happened a couple of times this year that they have lost ten minutes because they have lost the entire word twice. I do believe that this works well. They seem to understand that they are losing their free time when I erase the letters. I tell them that it's wasted time when they get chatty, and that it has to be made up.
When I have recess duty and they have lost time, then they stand on the sidewalk watching the other kids play while they serve their time.
