Possible Ideas

I found these two ideas in The Mailbox Magazine.

Syllabication Game

Provide a dictionary for each child. Cover the sides of a die with small stick-on labels cut to size; then label the die with the numberals 1,2, and
3 (using each numeral twice).

Next, divide students into two teams. Write a category - such as Snack
Foods, animals, or ice-cream flavors- on the board. Have a player from Team A roll the die; then have him write a word on the board that is in the designated category and has the same number of syllables as the number rolled. For example, if the category is snack foods and a 2 is

rolled, the player might write popcorn on the board. If the player needs help spelling the word, let his teammates use their dictionaires to help. Aware one point for a correct answer. Give the player a chance to earn an additional point by dividing the word into syllables. Play until ALL students have had a turn. Then declare the team with more points the winner.

You could have more than two teams. And of course, you would review how to identify syllables and rules.

Idea 2: Place Value

To Prepare this fun game of skill (and luck) program a set of index cards with alphabet letters, one cared per student. Next, write numbers on the board, one for each matching letter on a card. Include numbers up to the largest place value that your students have learned. Underline one digit in each number. To play:

1. have the first player from Team 1 choose a letter card and go to the board.
2. The player circles the number on the board that matches the letter on her card. Then she reads the number aloud and announces the value of the underlined digit to the rest of the class. (Example: 91,892 the 8 is underlined.) "Ninety-one thousand eight hundred ninety-two. The value of 8 is 800.")

3. If she is correct, her team scores that number of points. (In the example in Step 2, the iteam would earn 91,892 points!)

4. Then the first player from Team 2 repeats Step 1 - 2.

Each student keeps a running total of his team's points. The team with more points after all of the numbers on the board have been circles is the winner.

Hope this gets your creativity flowing! Good Luck!
GM PLEASE excuse misspellings/did NOT proofread.
