I think that you will find with the higher standards expected in first grade, that most kindergarten teachers find that it no longer a place for JUST play...Many of the kids in my class this year are reading, and all but one of 40 kids know all the letter names and most of the sounds....This is a school that receives Title I funding, so it is not an elitist population...This is just an expectation in our school...BUT of course we also play...we have a playhouse, centers, do science ceters once a week, math games etc...And all this in a half day program...
