kindergarten ease
By Joan

Clip to ScrapBook
A seasoned mentor kindergarten teacher gave me one piece of advice that was so valuable in helping my kindergarten day to run smoothly... songs! We have a song at the beginning of the day, a song for lunch time, different
songs for each of the subject areas or activities, a lining up song, and an end of the day song. Many of the songs I use I just made up to familiar tunes, but some are "real" songs. Per the suggestion of the teacher who gave me the idea, we never change our songs for the entire school year (but I do change them from year to year). It seems repetitious, but my students never seem to
tire of them. Kindergartners need repetition and regularity. The songs make transitions so smooth! I just start singing our "Good Morning Song" and they hurry to their places on the carpet as they sing along. This may sound silly, but it has proven to be a valuable tool for me and others I have shared this with. The songs are very short... less than a minute.
