    Our district does not retain kids without extreme circumstances, but in reading the last post, I was wondering... wouldn't the retention BE an instance of meeting a child's needs? Perhaps what he needs is extra practice in the academics or social skills of Kindergarten, and is not yet ready for the first grade curriculum. He'll be where his learning level needs to be, not where his age determines he needs to be. That's the basis of multi-age classrooms and developmental appropriateness, isn't it? It seems like a decent idea to me...
