In N.C, getting your degree only takes 4 years. The first 3 are spent completing university requirements and moving into major (education) requirements. The first semester of the 4th year is called the "Block." It's a full course load for 10 weeks and one day each week is spent in a classroom (always the same one--mine was a first grade class). The last 5 weeks are full time in that same class, but you don't fully take over--lots of observing, tutoring, etc and I even had to do secretarial work. These 5 weeks are considered an internship. Then, starting with second semester, you begin student teaching. This is 15 weeks of being in the same class, gradually taking over so that you have a full load for 9 of the weeks. Then, you are done! Hope this makes since! I'd love to hear what other states do!
