Great Class Book for 2nd Graders By Mary
|
|
Every month my second graders make a class book. This month I am using the book April Rabbits by Cleveland. I just checked Amazon and it is still in print. It's a cute book about how rabbits appear in the most unusual places| during the month of April. It takes each day of April and tells where the boy saw rabbits. It ends on the last day of April when the boy was walking home and saw NO rabbits, but he noticed a hippopotamus was following him home. Every year ducks come to our school and lay eggs in our courtyard, so we make up our book about ducks. We brainstorm where ducks were seen, and then each child | | picks a place, writes a sentence and then illustrates the sentence. I have the kids use thin line markers to illustrate so that the book can be run off, binded using a binding machine, and then taken home. The kids love it! I have a HUGE bulletin board in my classroom and the kids also illustrate their sentence in color and we make a big paper quilt out of the book. Later, after the pages are taken down, I laminate the pages and make a class book out of the colored pages. It's a great way to teach kids how to write interesting sentences...example words that mean "saw"...peered, glanced, and also adjectives to help make the sentence more interesting.
