Spelling
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Elaine,
Yes, spelling analogies can be found in GR & W on page 34 and 35. The original Day 4's spelling stuff should have read 'Making Connections'. It's interesting to watch good spellers, because they naturally
do this...(and DON'T think I have the book memorized, it's just handy for when I need to look something up!)
Analogy should be done at all GLs. For Kinders, it could start with their classmates names. The child wants to write 'she' in a story, you ask him to take down Ashley's name from the word wall and show him the chunk that makes the /sh/ sound in both. After you've modeled the
process of making connections, the child is responsible for finding somethings she knows to link to the new unknown spelling words. This is a powerful strategy for reading as well as writing. The kids who have difficulties with this, are also the ones who seem to feel that every single spelling word is a new entity and must be memorized as a whole. Once you've looked over the process, try it then email or post! ;-D
