another thought By Julianne

I taught an alternative kindergargen program (non contract) for several years. When a contract position opened up I applied for it. My colleagues knew and supposedly appreciated my teaching skills. But I was not offered| the contract position. I think there were a couple of problems there - because I wasn't a "real" teacher they came to think of me as not quite good enough (even though I had years of experience in a regular classroom elsewhere). Also, the program I was in was important to the school and it was difficult to find good teachers to work in it because the wage was much lower than a contract | | teacher would make. So I think they believed if they denied me a contract position I would be willing to stay where I was. I didn't do that. I interviewed elsewhere and eventually landed a wonderful contract job at a school I love. Anyway, be careful about being stigmatized as something less than a "real" teacher. And be sure the administration knows you are serious about moving into a full time tenure position ASAP.
