Hi, my idea probably won't help you for this year, but maybe you can use it next year. At the beginning of the year I ask my classroom parents if any of them have a 3 pound empty cat litter tub that I can have. In September my class takes an afternoon to bury certain items (banana peel, aluminum can, styrofoam cup, apple core, pencil,etc.)with topsoil in the cat litter tub. We close it tightly and then leave it in our classroom til Earth day. Then we open it up to see what decomposed. We then talk about the earth and how we can take care of it. Hope that helps!
