Subbing in 6th Grade By Jerry

Good posts! I sub mostly in Middle School (6,7,8) and 6th and 7th are definatly the biggest challange. Since I'm an older male, if I get "stern" and lock eyes with them, they usually know I mean business. I also will give| them the last 2 or 3 minutes for "free time", and I tell them that early, so they know they can lose it by messing up. I sometimes write 10 on the board, and when they ask what that means, I tell them that's how many seconds I will hold them after the bell rings. Next time they're noisy, I scratch out the 10 and write 20, and so on. They catch on pretty quick. Yes, I've yelled QUIET | | ! several times, but it needed to be heard over their noise. I've often been told by other teachers that the appreciate how under control I keep the class. That's even when I thought they were out of control. Go figure! And I do feel sorry for the regular teacher who is still struggling after 8 months.Jn
