Standards Based Report Cards
By Amanda K.

Clip to ScrapBook
Good luck with your report card. I was on our district's report card handbook committee, and I know what a job it is!

Our new report cards are based entirely on the state standards for California, and we only grade in
Math and Language Arts, with a note at the bottom that states that the other subjects are integrated into Math and Language Arts. For each standard (7 in Language Arts and 6 in Math), we give a score of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. 3 means that the student has met the standard, and most students get a 3. 4 and 5 are above standard grades, with only a few students getting 4's and a couple of students
getting 5's in each class. 2 means that the student is beginning to meet the standard, and a 1 means that the student is far from meeting the standard.

Under each standard are bullet points listing the components of that standard. Next to each component is a box, and if a student is not meeting the standard in that component, then you check the box so the parent knows exactly what problems the child is having with a given standard. We also wrote a parent handbook delineating specific activities that the parents could do to help their child with the components of each standard. It was difficult to learn how to use, but I like it now because it really gives the parent the picture of the whole child, as opposed to a nondescriptive C in Reading, for example. It also gives the parents a better sense of what we have to teach, particularly since they have the handbook.
