assertiveness
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I think for most first, second and even third year teachers it often comes down to the fact that you do not have a permanent job and you'll do just about anything to get that permanent job.

I think once a teacher has
some sort of tenure or permanent position they feel that they can be more assertive.

And often assertiveness comes with experience. How many of us were assertive during our University courses when we knew something wasn't marked correctly or a project wasn't given the proper instructions, etc.,
If we knew then what we know now!

Rather than looking into websites for assertive leadership

ideas, why not take a night course or a summer course this year. It's always a good course to take to help anyone with dealing with parents, students, administration, colleagues.

And don't get down on yourself too much. You will become more assertive as times goes on. I'm sure next year students will not have the same "power" because you will start your year differently and with a new attitude. This time of year tends to be when all of us (experienced and new) feel the most frustrated, so we need to remember that there is always next year to make changes and improvements in what we do.
