Spelling
By Therese

Clip to ScrapBook
I have been teaching 5th and 6th grade for at least six years now and when I first started I had spelling tests. I found that the kids would do wonderful on their tests but they were not applying it to their writing to me
spelling tests at this level seemed like a waste of time. I now teach my kids how to be resourceful use the dictionary and Thesaurus for new and interesting words. I grade them on their spelling within their writing. If I find a word mispelled, I write it on the bottom of their page and they are responsible for learning how to spell it correctly. We also have a word of the week which
devolops their vocabulary. They have to try to use it when they speak and write. I have found this to be successful and I am also teaching them to be resourceful. I make them work as if they were Authors editing their piece.
