creating a pleasant atmosphere

Hi Jessica,
A pleasant student atmosphere includes how successful and secure the students feel in your room too. I try to do things like keeping tallies each day for every time a student does something kind in the classroom.
Then we graph the total amount at the end of the day. The kids are at the point that they make the tallies too and help me graph-which gives them ownership in the classroom. I've also found that they are acting a lot more kind since we've been doing it! I also have a bulletin board that has important character traits we are working on. Any time I see a student display a trait,
I write their name on a paper star and put it under that trait. Doing things of this nature help create a pleasant atmosphere as well as the other type of ideas that Donna mentioned. I hope this helps.
