Moving to another grade

Clip to ScrapBook
Andrea,

I have taught 4 and 5th for 12 years and highly recommend you get a definite discipline plan first. It ususally takes 2 weeks to 1 month to let the 5th graders know you mean business. Otherwise they will walk
on you all year. I mean be very consistent. No chances. Once that is in place you will have a fabulous year. They have a great sense of humor and love doing long projects. Some good books to read would include Holes, On your honor, I Am Regina, Lucy Whipple, Box Car children for your lower readers, Winn Dixie, any non-fiction you can get your hands on, all the Harry Potter books, War
With Grandpa, and tons of read alouds. They also love poetry. you can do those as shared readings and make poetry books to keep in their desks to read whenever or memorize. You will probably do US history. That is tipically what 5th graders study. It is fun to have them choose a colony to imitate and have them put on a play for parents. Science will include the scientific process/ science experiements/ science fair.
