Simply show them the respect that they are looking for. They are at such a rough age. No longer a little kid but not yet a teenager yet. They are the 'tweens.. (cuz they are in between)
One day they will act like 10 year
olds.. other days they will have complicated problems like older teens have..

Just teach them how important respect is.. I have a great poster on my wall. It says "Respect is NOT a gift, it must be earned"
I believe that that goes BOTH ways. I must earn their respect and they must earn mine.

I also tell them to 'remember that I believe in you' after each class. Sometimes, it

can get pretty lonely at this age. Sometimes it feels like no one could possibly understand. It is a nice feeling knowing that SOMEONE believes in ya.

Go back in your memories and think about how you felt at that age. Then go from there. Always teach from your heart. Be fair.

A time out place is great too! This age has hot tempers and sometimes they and you need a break from one another but it might not be so serious that they need to be sent to the office. I have a chair specially placed for my students in the classroom across the hall.

Hope this helps..
