The idea of a homework quiz was from an old book called Making Every Minute Count. I think that's the title.

Yes, if the kids have kept their homework papers and made corrections diligently, then they can use their actual homework during the quiz. One teacher who used this technique would list the assignment page # and problem #, so kids could turn right to them in their notebooks.

I believe the quizzes were regularly scheduled for Friday, so yes, kids did know about them in advance. I love the idea because other than going over homework together in class, there is never any actual grading of homework! Sound pretty terrific, doesn't it.
