regrouping in subtraction

One mother taught her child to look at a subtraction problem and say...

If the number on the bottom is bigger, you need to make a trade (or regroup).

After we have used to manipulatives and begin solving written problems, I try to get the children into the habit of looking at the problem and repeating the saying before they try to solve it.
