Have your principal on stand-by in case you need him to help diffuse the meeting if it gets out of hand.I would approach the parents in this manner if I was dealing with this problem. - First I would let them know that | I respect their viewpoint even if I don't agree with it. Then I would simply tell them that in my school and in my class all races are treated equally. The book will remain in my class and that their child will hear stories in class about other races and about equality, etc., I would also suggest that you let them know that you will respect their wishes and no longer send home books | | for their child that they do not wish him to read. And if by chance a book does get sent home - or their child chooses a book that they feel is inappropriate they can just not read it and send it back to school the next day.Unfortunately we cannot control the thoughts and prejudices of all people. All we can do is control what we share in our classrooms. I'm assuming your Principal will back you on this subject.
