SHUTDOWN By Tabitha

This is my third year teaching fifth grade. For the most part I have been lucky and not had to bad of a class. This year around January after we came back from Winter Break I got the class that lost their minds. I had to| repeatedly go over the Class Code of Conduct and the Consequence chart. After being frustrated and having way to many headaches I decided to do a mini shutdown. I emailed SHUTDOWN and I also asked my prinicple if I could do it for three days. He said sure try it. Well, it worked wonderfully. I don't have to yell and my students know right away what they are expected to do. I appreciate that | | fact that another colleague took her time to help others. I only wish that my fellow team would do the same instead of tear each other down and make fun of each other. I have one colleague that is next door to me that we get along very well and teach basically the same way. She to did a mini shutdown and got good results. When others complained I told them to go see the prinicple and then they saw that my students are the only ones that walk down the hallways quietly, in a straight line, and hands are behind their backs. My students realized that they set the example of good behavior for all the other students in school. I make them take the responsibilty for their behavior and the consequences as well. I became a teacher to make a difference and to show young children that they are capable of doing anything they put their minds to. THAT'S THE ONLY REASON TO BE A TEACHER!
