RE: Leaving Early
By Michelle

Clip to ScrapBook
I frequently see statements about substitutes wanting the same respect and priveleges as regular teachers -- doesn't that imply the same responsibiliites? I can see being allowed to leave early, but why would you expect
to be paid for time you do not work? Substitutes in my school are expected to stay even when the students have early dismissal. Many choose to help out in the classrooms by straightening up, cleaning equipment (we're a special school and some of them are around enough to know what to do), putting up bulletin boards, etc. I always try to leave a list so that the sub is not just sitting
there. However, some subs request to be included in the inservice training. What a great way for them to be ready to assist in our classes! Others request to work (and be paid for) only half a day. I'm sorry, but as a regular teacher, I can't say I think it would be fair for you to be paid for a full day when you leave early.
