dictionary use
By jody

Clip to ScrapBook
To help my second graders get faster at locating each main letter section in the dictionary we have races. We divide into two teams. One memeber from each side stands up with a closed dictionary. Then I say a letter..."n". The kids must divide the dictionary and let it fall open. If they find a guide word that starts with an N then their team wins. I don't let them page through the dictionary looking. They must open and close the dictionary each time for a new try. In this manner I see they think more about the location of that particular letter in the alphabet and therefore in the placement in the dictionary.
