new to first grade too

Pamela,
I am so glad I found this site. I too have been assigned to teach first grade mid year. I have taught kindergarten before. So, I am pretty familiar their short attention spans, crying, restroom,etc... How do you stop them from wanting to sharpen their pencils all day? Our custodian put a new one in my room today and the kids kept wanting to use it....LOL
This will be a very interesting year. Good luck to you. Feel free to send me any good tips to remember. Do any of you have centers in your rooms? We did it in kindergarten.
