AR math By Lisa

Angie,I teach 5th grade and we have the AR Math program. It started out as just a pilot program in the 5th grade, but was so successful we bought it for the entire school. Thats how much we believe in it. I also am | a hands on teacher. I still teach approximately 40 minutes of whole group, staying with my county curriculum. I then alot 40 minutes for AR math. During this time, I allow the students to use calculators. We bought TI-15 calculators, which are a great introduction to the graphing calculators students are expected to use at the 6th grade level. Also, 5th grade students are allowed to | | use calculators on our state assessment. AR Math lets each student progress at their own pace. It prints a report for you telling you who is having difficulty and with what. When I have 3 or more students having trouble with the same objectives, I do a mini-power lesson just for that group. It works wonderful. More small group instruction, while meeting the needs of both TAG and Special Ed. The best part is no one is held up while waiting on the rest of the class to catch on, and no one is pushed forward before they have mastered the objective. Its wonderful!!!
