Clip to ScrapBook
I do not believe in using Accelerated Reader for assessment purposes. In my school we use it strictly to foster a love of reading while increasing comprehension skills. For those reluctant readers, I usually lower their
point level goal in order to assure some sort of success. I have also used an incentive chart with reluctant readers that they can put a sticker on for each book read and quiz passed. Then they earn things like homework coupons, lunch with the teacher, etc.
If you are going to grade your students, I would look at the students' success with meeting their goals AND the percent correct
they are getting on their quizzes. If your students are reading many books with very little accuracy on the quizzes, then there must be a problem. We set our goals and reading levels based on a student's NCE on the standardized tests we take each year. Then each teacher can adjust these numbers as necessary.
I hope this was some help.
