I do not believe in using Accelerated Reader for assessment purposes. In my school we use it strictly to foster a love of reading while increasing comprehension skills. For those reluctant readers, I usually lower their point level goal in order to assure some sort of success. I have also used an incentive chart with reluctant readers that they can put a sticker on for each book read and quiz passed. Then they earn things like homework coupons, lunch with the teacher, etc. If you are going to grade your students, I would look at the students' success with meeting their goals AND the percent correct | | they are getting on their quizzes. If your students are reading many books with very little accuracy on the quizzes, then there must be a problem. We set our goals and reading levels based on a student's NCE on the standardized tests we take each year. Then each teacher can adjust these numbers as necessary. I hope this was some help. Mindy
