To Adrienne and Brenda Dee! By Leslie

Hi there! I am glad you're excited about Morning Stations! My students really enjoy them, and it gives me a chance to do the necessary morning tasks (checking homework, attendance, etc). To Brenda Dee...After I finish | these necessary morning tasks, then I walk around the room and observe the groups. I group students that work well together, with a mixture of high/low ability (for lack of a better word). The students in each group are there to help each other and work together. They are allowed to talk about the work, and can ask each other for help if needed. I have used this time to work with one or | | two students who, for example, need extra help with a new math concept or with writing, etc. Let me know if this makes sense, or if you have any other questions!!To Adrienne: Last year, my students kept a "Morning Station" notebook, which was just a wide-ruled one subject notebook. They wrote all their answers in this, and although they self-corrected, I could easily spot check to see if students were really putting in effort. Frequently, I would write check plus, check, or check minus in their notebook, and would also conference with students (briefly) if they were not putting forth their greatest effort during Morning Stations. I often have students "share their creative work" with their morning station group (for example, if they have to make up sentences using one adverb in each, they could share with each other). I think I am going to have them use three-ring binders next year, because the notebooks were so unorganized, filled with stapled papers (if the students had to write on a paper, I had them staple it into their notebook). So, to answer your question, I don't collect the morning station work, but I certainly don't ignore it either. I spot check frequently, and just by watching/observing I can tell who is off task and not doing the work! I hope this helps! Let me know if you need any other info!! Leslie :-)
