What about getting a music stand? Or using a presentation easel? They are pretty cheap. I've seen them for about 10 dollars in pawn shops that sell instruments. I have both -- the music stand can be short in the back -- you could but a thin piece of luan on it to support taller books. My presentation easel disconnects by screws from the legs to set it on a table. It is just made of wood.

I also have a table-top aluminum painting easel. It folds up and away. It has a stem (?) on the back that can swing up to make it taller.
