Homework
By Shelley

Clip to ScrapBook
I think I would step back and look at my objectives. Sometimes we get so bogged down in grades that we miss the purpose of what we're doing. First of all, homework every night is tiresome and frustrating - for you and your
students. Do they actually need the extra practice, or are they simply doing it for a grade? Secondly, do you notice a pattern with those that turn in late work? Many of our children do not have the resources or the help at home to do homework. Are you truly serving the student in the best way possible by assigning homework on an every day basis? How much instruction time is spent
going over homework? You should be able to discern the day you teach the lesson if a student knows what your talking about. Of course, there are times when homework is useful. It does teach responsiblity. It can be used to reinforce a behavior - if needed. I hope you haven't found my response too irksome. I made the same mistake my first couple of years also. A collegue pulled me back after I was complaining of all my work (as if I had time to do it all) and made me see that I had lost focus. Good luck!!!
