Homework
By Trish

Clip to ScrapBook
During my student teaching, my cooperative teacher had a very organized way of keeping track of homework. The best part of it was that we NEVER handled it.

Her classes are departmentalized.. hence 5 classes. (So will mine
this year. I am doing this for homework in my class too) She had a folder for each class. In each folder was a copy of each student's attendence card. This was good because she only needed one copy for the entire year. Instead of marking attendence, she marked homework. She would call roll. The students were on the honor system with saying if they did it or not. Incomplete homework was
not accepted nor was anything late, unless you were absent. Then you had 2 days to show us the work. At first, I thought the honor system was a joke. But periodically, she would walk around and check homework. They never knew when we would do this. If they were caught lying, not only did they receive an F in homework for the day, they also received a lunch detention. It worked really good. Plus, all you had to do was glance on the card to see when the homework was missed and how many.
Homework was considered a test grade. 0-2 missed was an A, 3-5 was a B, and so forth.

Also as an incentive, she had a chart that she would put a sticker on for each day that an entire class had their homework. And that was ALWAYS checked first by us walking around to see it. At the end of the marking period, the class with the most homework participation, earned a prize of some kind.

Worked great.. This was for 5th grade btw.
