Allison, it sounds good. I use basically the same system. I will not take homework that is late, I will take make-up for an absence but even then they have 2-3 days to get their work in, depending on the length of the absence. I have 33 6th graders and it is overwhelming sometimes with paper. One thing I do do is have a "I DID NOT DO MY HOMEWORK" page for each student where they write the date, type of homework missed and the reason that it was not completed. After they have filled the page, missed 4 assignments, it goes home for parents signature. I love some of the reasons for not doing homework. Good luck on your plan, it does work.
