My room is open!
By Joy

Kelly,
First, I would like to congratulate you on your new job!

I currently work at a school that has open classrooms. At first, it took some getting use to. You must be aware that people are constantly moving
in and out of your classroom throughout the day. I just met with a new teacher at my school who has similar concerns.

I have found that the key to working in this room is maintaining excellent classroom management. If the teacher who shares your space cannot manage his/her class it can be very difficult. You must also be aware of your voice while you are teaching. You want to reach

your students and not the children in the next class.

Over the years I have gotten use to hearing the teacher beside me teach. In the past three years there has been a different teacher beside me. Every year, I hope that we will be able to work collaboratively. Get to know your neighbors and ask them for suggestions. I'm sure that they will be willing to share their ideas.

During testing situations, I often let my neighbors know what time I will be testing. This helps because they generally plan quiet activities during this time.
I have also made small cubicles (sp.) or offices out of poster board for my children to use during tests. This is great because they keep their eyes on their own papers and they are less distracted by the other classes.

Don't give up all the terrific hands-on activities. I constantly have my students working in groups, presenting and moving about the classroom. I think that using your carpet space for small groups will work just fine! I teach 3rd grade and I have my kids sit on the floor quite a bit.

I wish you well with your new job! I'm sure everything will work out just fine! I hope this helps a little!
Joy
