winter olympics
By Sharon in CA

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 4th grade and have "done" an Olympics project each Olympics year for many years. Because of the age of the students, this is usually the first time they have paid any attention to the Olympics and they enjoy it.
The parents also get involved because TV time needs to be scheduled, as well as use of the newspaper and/or Internet. While a few of the activities are completed in class, most of the project is done at home. Sometimes there are complaints from parents that they don't watch television or don't have time to watch - but the project can still be completed using the newspaper. I always have
the Olympic section of our local newspaper in class for student use (just in case they don't get it at home) and allow time for the Internet). We always take time to discuss what is happening, so that all students have access to the information. Because there are questions about the Opening and Closing ceremonies, I always tape them, so that we can watch them together in class.

This is always a successful project, with lots of positive comments from parents (who also may be paying close attention to the Olympics for the first time).

If you would like more information, let me know - my "file" is at school.
