The children just laced the blocks together and then I tied them off in a knot and trimmed the excess because I stapled them to the bulletin board--consequently it looked like a "sewn together quilt," but it was really stapled| together. The quilt blocks came from a pattern in a book called "Alternatives to Worksheets"--it was simply a square with a diamond inside it. I know that teaching resources for the book Josefina and the Story Quilt also have patterns. The construction paper squares were precut and holes were prepunched by me (I did one hole at each corner) to save time. Those squares were only slightly | | larger than the quilt pattern--just enough to create a colorful border. We used bright flourescent pinks, greens, yellows, and oranges and believe it or not, the background for the bulletin board was black with a "quilt-like: border purchased at the teacher supply store. The letters for Character Counts were cut from the same flourescent paper. It really did look pretty neat--the colors just seemed to blend together.
