I use a "semi" portfolio system.. i have a 1" binder for each child to keep their work in..published work goes in clear sleeves to protect it and/or since most of it is shape book,e tc.. that you cant' hole punch into the binder..i alternate weeks with informal and formal writing that way by the end of each nine weeks i have complete four types of formal writing (narrative, etc..) and at least four weeks of informal work (poetry, free writing etc..)..i encourage a lot of reading respoonse writing ..and journal writing in the am as they come in..or specific journal writing during our infromal week...
