first time teacher @ 48!

Clip to ScrapBook
I like the way you described us, GM..grey hair and laugh lines. It lets prospective employers know that we've EARNED them....from life experiences, which can be more valuable than any "book learnin'". When I walk into my
first classroom next month I'll be only weeks away from my 48th birthday!
I was interviewed by the Spec Ed co-ordinator in my town's district & offered a position to teach ECE. I just graduated in Jan (finished classes in Dec)& have been pounding the pavement ever since with few results. I interviewed w/this district for another position and applied for yet another, with no results.
This offer came up unexpectedly when someone left. They pulled my resume from their file. This time they said they like the fact I have life experience AND just graduated having learned "the latest & greatest". The fact that it took me 13 years to get here, they said, showed that I have determination & a true calling. (Why that works for this position but not the others I don't know.)
I, too, feared that my age would be a problem. It didn't seem to be this time!
I hope all the frustrated job seekers out there will find the position they desire. Good Luck!
