community history
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
One interesting activity to try is to visit a local cemetary. There are several activities to do while you are there.

- Have students record and graph the birth and death dates on the headstones. Do they notice a pattern?
What events in the history of your community would account for a larger than average number of births or deaths in a given year?

- Bring tissue paper and crayons and make rubbings of some of the headstones. Look for interesting artwork or for unusual names. Can you find relatives with the same names in the current phone book?

- Look for the graves of famous community leaders.

Before you go, make a list of the city's mayors or other officials who have passes away. Can you find their burial places?

- What is the oldest grave you can find? What is the newest? List the things the oldest citizen would not have known about that the newest would have found commonplace (cars, Nintendo...)

It sounds sort of morbid, but cemetaries contain a wealth of history.
