student correcting

I also read the article and found the controversy surprising...I teach 3rd grade and have used this method, although not often....Little kids can't read each other's writing well enough!! But I do believe strongly in the
"teachable moment" and making the best use of our time. If students are expected to work in a climate of respect for one another, I see no problem. I agree with the article that I read that said, "The controversy is baffling because teachers often hear from the business world that students graduate without the ability to work together. In the real world there are people who are going to
see your work product. In the real world, there are people who are going to be critical of your work product."
Personally I see no problem with it and many benefits if used sparingly. (I have heard of teachers that do this exclusively.) Like any teaching method there must be a balance. Some parents seem to want to overprotect their children and have enough time on their hands to take on these causes. Maybe the parents at your school could be persuaded to put their energy toward another more worthwhile cause. Good luck.
