You will LOVE 5th grade! It is my favourite grade. The students are old enough to be logical with and you won't have to give each of them the same instruction individually (which you usually have to do with younger students).
Your idea of classroom helpers is a great idea. I have been using that for years and if nothing else, handing out papers allows you to keep your eyes on the class while the "Paper People" do the leg work. I figured out how many different chores there were in my class and set up a chart board. I placed the student's names on cue cards and laminated them. Each week I shuffled the
cards and posted them next to the jobs due the next week. It was usually a highlight of Friday afternoon when they found out their "chore" for the coming week! Good Luck and enjoy 5th grade!
