camping
By Stephanie

Clip to ScrapBook
I am doing a unit on camping next week in my preschool class. I have turned my home center into a camp by adding a tent, lantern, and fishing poles. You can even add a kiddie pool with numbered fish(for math). Make a fishing
pole with dowels, magnets, and paper clips on the fish. I also cut out letters and created words on laminated paper. I put stickers on the paper for simple word recognition. For example, I printed the word dog on paper and added dog stickers. The students fish for the d, o, and g letters in the pool to match the paper. I have collected old sheets and am allowing the kids to created
their own tents around the classroom. I have provided flashlights for turning out the lights and playing at centers in the dark. I have added ball pits without the balls for additional tents in the room. We will be making s'mores next week. I have added dirt, pine needles, pinecones, leaves, etc. to the sand table. They can also use these items to create collages. This theme also allows study of bears, hibernation, insects, poinsonous plants or berries or snake, pond life, first aid, bird identification, friendship, team work, recycling, outdoor sports, etc. There are so many possibilites. Make snacks using berries or natural ingredients(trail mix)for feeding deer, birds. Make binoculars out of toilet paper rolls for studying nature. Chart the birds observed or study your native wildlife. Create a class letter to a local conservation group and establish a corrispondence. Create class tents using large cardboard. Make a bear by stuffing brown trash bags. Make tress by stacking boxes and painting. Enjoy. I hope this helps. Let me know what you think. (check your local library for books on camping-I found many but they are at school). If you need titles let my know.
