First grade resources By Debbie

Hi all, Congratulations on your new classes...First graders are wonderful, so full of delight at most anything. Just be prepared for the inevitable comments the first month or so of school (especially if your kids came from half day Kinder like mine)..."I want to go home now. (and it's only 10:30!)...I'm hungry. I have to go to the bathroom. (ALL day long)" My suggestions would be to get the following professional books in order to plan and implement a balanced literacy program. Thinking and Learning Together (Fisher) While I love the books by the others, this book has a little bit of everything, | | to begin your planning. It was written by a first grade teacher-researcher with lots of excellent ideas and practices. Then move into any or all of the following, depending upon what you'd like detailed information... Guided Reading (Fountas and Pinnell) Word Matters (Fountas and Pinnell Interactive Writing (McCarrier, Pinnell & Fountas) Perspectives on Shared Reading (Fisher) *Conversations (Routman) is another great all encompassing book, but I think it may cover too many GLs for you at this point, Routman is a great writer and has LOTS of experiences to share at all levels...If you find you need a book on anything else in particular, please post again or email. Take care, Debbie ;-D
