Going from K to 5
By Donna

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi!
I went from 1st to 5th and I was nervous about it too. I love it now! One thing I had to remember was that just because they are fifth graders doesn't mean they know everything. I assumed they knew procedures and
basic routines and they didn't. Fifth graders need modeling just as much as k's or firsties. Make sure they understand your expectations up front- they do not like things changing mid-stream. Give them responsibility for classroom up keep and materials. Have them help determine the rules that will make their classroom a place they want to be. Model consequences of not following their
own rules. Also, read to them. They love to be read to,still. I use storybooks very often to teach a strategy, skill, or idea. They love it, even if they have read the storybook hundreds of times!
