First days
By Cheryl Lawrence

Clip to ScrapBook
Sonya, Congratulations! I would not give actual homework the first couple of days--typically I tell my students that there homework is to get all of their papers turned back in that mom and dad had to read and sign. I do
however, begin a reading log the first day--to set that initial importance of reading at home--you will probably also find that second graders are usually quite eager to get back in a routine. Something I do during the day is to make a class word search of first names. You can do this on www.puzzlemaker.com quite easily. This is on their desk when they arrive. I also include a basket
of books at each table--these booksare on a variety of levels. This way, since they don't "know the room" yet--they have easy access to some good reading from the very beginning. Hope this helps.
